How United Airlines Is Rebuilding Its 2nd-Busiest Transatlantic Hub Without Breaking It
United stands to benefit from major work that will add 36 gates at Washington Dulles.
United Airlines is expanding its operations at Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) as part of a large overhaul of the facility. A new concourse is opening this month, marking a key step in the airport’s planned transformation.
The project at IAD includes a major refurbishment of the main terminal, an expanded underground transport system, and additional works designed to increase usable space. In total, the plan aims to add or revitalize more than five million square feet (0.5 million square meters) at the site.
The overhaul has a broad financing package, with about $20 billion earmarked for the overall upgrade. The airport’s board approved a $15.5 billion increase to the existing $4.4 billion budget in August of this year to support the project.
As part of the developments at IAD, United Airlines is set to benefit from the construction by adding 36 gates at the airport. The gate addition is tied to the broader modernization effort intended to bolster United’s presence at the hub.
