A man died after a small aircraft crashed near a Tarrant County airfield on the late-morning hours of a Wednesday, according to officials.

The incident occurred near West Bonds Ranch Road and Thatcher Road, southeast of Hicks Airfield, with responders arriving around 10 a.m. CBS News Texas confirmed police on the scene and the area cordoned off with red tape.

The FAA stated the crash happened around 9:50 a.m and indicated the pilot was the sole occupant. The pilot was later identified as 67-year-old John Unangst.

Fire crews reported a grass fire sparked by the crash, which was quickly extinguished. The Fort Worth Fire Department said the pilot was declared dead at the scene.

A Lancair IV-P kit plane, built by Amigo Air Enterprises and registered to Plane Metrics LLC of Fort Worth, was identified by its tail number in FAA records. The aircraft had a single engine and was built in 2000, with a valid certificate through May 2028. The NTSB will take charge of the investigation.
