Riyadh airport closed until 17 October following wave of deadly Houthi strikes
Nearly twenty people killed over past week as Yemeni rebel attacks target Saudi Arabia's primary airport
A fresh strike on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh has resulted in casualties, with one person reported dead and eleven injured after a projectile hit Terminal 4 and sparked a fire in a departure lounge.
Saudi authorities identified the deceased as a Pakistani national, according to a statement shared on X. The attack followed a previous bombardment of the same facility the day prior, which left 13 people killed and hundreds injured.
The airport has faced repeated attacks since early last week, occurring amid wider hostilities involving Yemen-based actors and regional tensions. Houthi forces claim responsibility for the strikes, saying they used a combination of ballistic missiles and attack drones.
Security forces reported ongoing interceptions of projectiles across Saudi Arabia, including a cruise missile near Riyadh, a drone in the Eastern Province, and a ballistic missile toward Khamis Mushait that was intercepted. Sirens sounded in Abha on Monday morning, though officials noted no significant damage.
As a result of the recent attacks, Riyadh airport has extended its flight suspension and remains closed until at least 17 October. The broader regional context includes diplomatic efforts and warnings from various international actors amid escalating clashes.
