IndiGo flight diverted after power bank fire: See the video
Before you toss a charger into your travel bag, check the rules for bringing it aboard.
A portable power bank reportedly caught fire aboard an IndiGo flight, prompting the plane to divert and land emergently in Hyderabad, India. The incident involved IndiGo Flight 6E 6115 en route from Delhi to Chennai on Oct. 11.
Around 180 passengers and seven crew members were aboard when the fire occurred in an overhead luggage compartment. Cabin crew extinguished the fire, and the aircraft landed safely at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, according to local reports.
Video footage circulating online shows passengers in the aisle attempting to contain the flames in the overhead area during the in-flight incident. No injuries were reported, and IndiGo arranged another aircraft to continue the journey to Chennai.
IndiGo described smoke detected from a passenger’s personal electronic device, with the airline stating the cabin crew responded promptly and brought the situation under control. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.
The airline’s baggage policy restricts power banks to be carried in reach of the passenger rather than in overhead bins or checked baggage, and prohibits using or charging them during flight. These restrictions reflect broader safety guidance around lithium-ion battery risks on aircraft.
