Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR) opened a new $1.3 billion terminal on October 13, replacing its aging passenger complex. The project, part of the Elevate BUR initiative, expands the facility to about 355,000 square feet and keeps the same 14 gates.

The new terminal is located farther from the active runway, moving to roughly 880 feet away to meet FAA buffer requirements, compared with the old terminal’s 257-foot distance. Construction began in January 2024 and the airport continued flight operations during the build.

Passengers can expect a modern experience with updated amenities, including valet parking, new rideshare zones, an airfield-view bar, and several local-authored design touches. The layout preserves outdoor boarding by continuing to allow passengers to walk onto the tarmac and board via stairs or a ramp.

Commercial operations remain served by nine major airlines and 29 nonstop destinations, with Southwest and Alaska among the carriers benefiting from larger aircraft capability at BUR. The terminal’s upgrades are intended to accommodate larger, quieter, and more fuel-efficient aircraft while preserving the airport’s neighborhood-accessible feel.

Inside the terminal, 13 new dining and shopping options join existing offerings, including local and regional concepts. The airport notes that baggage carousels are now indoors, and the project includes earthquake and ADA accessibility upgrades. The first departing flight from the new terminal was Alaska Airlines 3401 to Santa Rosa, followed by Southwest 189 arriving from Las Vegas.
