United Airlines has begun installing Starlink Wi-Fi on its Boeing 737 MAX 8 fleet, starting with aircraft based in Guam, the carrier announced on October 13, 2026.

Two of its Guam-based MAX 8s are already equipped and are among the first in United’s MAX 8 fleet to receive the service.

United also confirmed it has finished replacing its Guam-based Boeing 737-800s with newer 737 MAX 8 aircraft ahead of schedule. Chief Customer Officer David Kinzelman made the announcement at a press conference at Antonio B. Won Pat International Airport (GUM).

“We said we would replace the entire Guam fleet with MAX 8 aircraft by the end of this year, and we’ve finished early,” Kinzelman said. He added that the airline was proud the same aircraft are among the first of its MAX 8s to get Starlink.

Starlink brings faster connectivity to long ocean crossings in the Pacific

Starlink uses low-Earth orbit satellites to provide internet access, including over oceans and remote areas where traditional inflight Wi-Fi has struggled.

United said this makes the service especially useful on its Pacific network, where many flights cross long stretches of open water and serve isolated communities. According to the airline, onboard speeds can exceed traditional broadband available in many parts of Micronesia.

The service is free for MileagePlus members in all cabins and supports multiple devices at once.

Starlink now on about 47% of United’s daily flights, with fleetwide rollout due by end of 2027

United expects to complete Starlink installations across its entire fleet before the end of 2027. The service is currently available on about 47% of the airline’s daily flights.

Since launching Starlink last spring, United has carried more than 37.7 million passengers on more than 538,000 equipped flights, connecting more than 14 million devices. The airline said Wi-Fi customer satisfaction scores on those aircraft nearly doubled over that period.

Ten 737 MAX 8s now operate all of United’s narrowbody flying from Guam

United’s Guam-based fleet now consists of 10 Boeing 737 MAX 8s, which replaced the older 737-800s. The airline first introduced the MAX 8s in Guam in March 2026 and rolled them out across the region over the following months.

The aircraft now handles all of United’s narrowbody flights from Guam, serving 15 destinations, including its Island Hopper service across Micronesia and routes to Asia. United also operates extensive service between Guam and Japan.

Each MAX 8 has 164 seats, including 14 in United First. Every seat has a seatback screen, measuring 13 inches in United First and 10 inches in Economy, along with USB charging and Bluetooth connectivity.

unitedThe aircraft also has larger overhead bins and more extra-legroom seats. The front rows of Economy can be converted to carry a medical stretcher for medevac patients, a feature tailored to the needs of communities in Micronesia.

Upgrades follow a refreshed check-in lobby at Guam’s airport

The Starlink rollout is the latest of several investments United has made in Guam over the past year. The airline has also refreshed its check-in lobby at Antonio B. Won Pat International Airport with new kiosks and a redesigned layout intended to reduce congestion.

United is one of the largest private employers in the region, with more than 1,000 employees across Guam and Micronesia.
