For aircraft owners tired of dealing with Facebook and other marketplace scams, a new website promises to make the buying and selling of parts “fraud-resistant.” The HangarYard launched this week and offers free 90-day listings for sellers with a flat $6 fee when the item sells.
The man behind this new marketplace is Silas Thomas, a private pilot and owner of a GlaStar experimental airplane.
“I built HangarYard because, as a pilot and technologist, I saw how little trust there was in many classified ad sites, and a wholesale lack of a real end-to-end aviation parts marketplace,” Thomas says. “Every feature we’ve built — from ID verification, automated scanning, and the message relay to checkout, shipping, and storefronts — exists because someone in this community told us about a deal that almost fell apart or, worse, money they lost to a scammer, and the difficulty and high cost of selling their parts and services via the more traditional routes. We wanted a marketplace pilots, builders, mechanics, and aviation enthusiasts could trust, built by someone who commutes to work in a GlaStar.”
HangarYard promises to address the classifieds’ biggest headache—fraud—by verifying sellers with government IDs and screening listings through a mix of automated tools and human review before they ever go live. To keep the scammers at bay, your contact info stays locked behind a message relay until you hand it out, and they scrub the location data off your uploaded photos. It costs nothing to post or renew a listing, and for the homebuilt crowd, they’ve included the specs that buyers look for, like Phase I status and builder logs. You can buy and sell parts with a credit card directly on the site without HangarYard taking a commission, while baked-in shipping tools make getting a box out the door a lot less painful. GA businesses have the ability to set up branded storefronts, bulk-import inventory, and manage leads without having to build their own e-commerce site from scratch.
