TSA warns travelers about seasonal mistake that could trigger airport security delays
Halloween travelers wearing costume makeup, bringing metal-heavy accessories and carrying props could face delays and challenges at airports, the TSA is warning.
Travelers planning Halloween flights should be aware that some costume elements can cause delays at TSA checkpoints, even though costumes themselves are generally allowed.
TSA guidance notes that certain accessories, masks, special makeup and metal pieces may trigger verification issues during screening, potentially slowing the process if identity cannot be confirmed.
Industry expert Keith Jeffries, a former TSA regional director, cautions that facial recognition at airports is becoming more common, and elaborate makeup or face coverings that hinder recognition can create screening challenges.
Prop luggage, including weapon-like items or replicas such as fake explosives or weapons, can raise security concerns; some items may be allowed in checked luggage but not in carry-on bags, and replicas like certain famous props are not permitted through security.
As a practical tip, packing elaborate costumes and accessories in checked luggage is advised to avoid delays, and travelers must still adhere to standard liquid restrictions for makeup carried in carry-ons.
