The pilot of a Piper Malibu Mirage JetPROP DLX reported icing after flying through a thunderstorm before the aircraft crashed in Wisconsin killing him and five passengers Tuesday night. Four of those aboard were a family group returning from watching a volleyball match involving other family members. The aircraft was on a flight from Kenosha to Menomonie when it hit the weather near the Wisconsin Dells amusement park.

The plane was at 24,000 feet when the pilot issued a PIREP for severe icing. He then asked ATC to descend. The plane entered a right turn and started the descent when it apparently went out of control. It was diving at 21,000 feet per minute before the crash. There was a convective SIGMET for thunderstorms and severe turbulence for the area east of the accident site according to Aviation Safety Network.
