Italy airport data network fault: Flights delayed and cancelled
A problem affecting Italy's airport data network caused delays and flight cancellations on Friday morning. Enav says it was not a cyber attack or sabotage. #EuropeNews
Italy faced widespread disruptions at several airports due to faults in the data transmission network underpinning air traffic control services, according to Enav, the national air navigation service provider.
From 6:00 local time, flow management measures were introduced to maintain safety amid rising air traffic and ongoing faults, resulting in a temporary reduction in the capacity to handle aircraft in Italian airspace. Enav stressed there is no link to hacker attacks or sabotage.
The fault, detected during the night between Thursday and Friday, led Enav to identify the data transmission network as the source while it works to determine causes and restore full operations. Normal traffic management with full capacity was reported to have been possible until 6:00 Friday morning.
Disruptions affected multiple airports, with cancellations at Rome Fiumicino (four flights) and at Milan Linate, as well as impacts at Milan Malpensa and Naples Capodichino. Some flights to Riyadh, Tirana and Trieste were among those cancelled, and other services reported delays of up to about 60 minutes.
Passengers were urged to check flight status with their airline as airports continued to experience delays and cancellations due to the network problem.
The situation highlights ongoing operational impacts at Italian airports tied to the data transmission network, as authorities work to restore full system operations.
