A data transmission network fault affecting air traffic control services caused disruptions and flight cancellations at several Italian airports, the national air navigation service provider Enav announced.

Enav said that from 06:00 local time, in response to rising air traffic and ongoing faults, flow management measures were introduced to maintain safety, resulting in a temporary reduction in the capacity to handle aircraft in Italian airspace.

The authority noted that the faults were identified in the data transmission network, with efforts underway to determine causes and restore full system operations. It also stated there was no link to hacker attacks or sabotage.

Delays and cancellations were reported at Rome Fiumicino, Milan Linate, and Naples Capodichino airports, with flights to Riyadh, Tirana, and Trieste among those canceled at Rome Fiumicino. Other services showed delays of up to about 60 minutes.

Additional disruptions affected Milan Linate, Milan Malpensa, and Naples Capodichino, as airport operators urged passengers to check flight status with their airline.

The situation followed faults detected in the overnight period between Thursday and Friday, with normal air traffic management maintained until 06:00 on Friday morning, according to Enav.
