Houthis claim missile attack on Aden airport as Iran denies involvement
Two missiles hit grounds of Aden International Airport, with no casualties reported as authorities confirm second such incident in less than a week
Two missiles struck the grounds of Aden International Airport in southern Yemen, with the Houthi movement claiming responsibility for the attack as part of ongoing clashes with Saudi-backed forces. The Aden Capital Security Department stated the rockets landed inside the airport complex, marking a second such incident in less than a week. Preliminary information suggested there were no casualties.
The Houthis said the attack targeted the Saudi forces’ command headquarters at the Badr camp in Aden province, as well as a weapons depot. An AFP journalist reported hearing two loud explosions near the airport, but there was no confirmation of what was hit.
Iran denied accusations that it had encouraged the Houthis to increase attacks on Saudi Arabia, stating it had played no role in the group’s operations. Iranian officials emphasized that Yemen's armed forces act according to their own interests and assessments, and they dismissed claims of involvement or escalation.
The Saudi-led military coalition said it intercepted additional missiles and drones on Friday as Houthi attacks continued, in the context of fighting with Yemen’s internationally recognized government’s backers. The conflict in the region has involved multiple attacks on targets linked to Saudi Arabia, including in or around airports and other facilities.
Iran reiterated offers to mediate between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis, noting discussions with Saudi officials and a readiness to help resolve the crisis, while warning against the use of military means to settle the dispute. Saudi and Houthi sides have previously exchanged proposals for dialogue through regional and international mediation efforts.
