Two men have died in a light plane crash near Scone Aerodrome in the NSW Upper Hunter, according to reports. The two occupants were the only people aboard at the time of the incident.

The victims were identified as Revel Downing, 58, and a 63-year-old man. They had traveled from Western Australia to inspect and purchase the aircraft, which is described as a recreational, kit-built plane.

Witness and tracking data indicate the aircraft climbed to about 145 meters after take-off, then rapidly lost speed and altitude before crashing seconds later. Authorities say the aircraft entered an uncontrollable spin prior to impact.

Emergency crews were called to Bunnan Road near the Scone Racecourse and Scone Aerodrome just before 2pm. Both men died at the scene, and fuel was reported to have spilled from the wreckage.

A crime scene was established and investigators examined the circumstances surrounding the crash. Recreational Aviation Australia and the Australian Transport Safety Bureau were notified, with the ATSB stating the aircraft was operating under Australia’s recreational aviation system; the ATSB does not investigate recreational aircraft accidents. Investigations into the incident are continuing.
