The US Department of Transportation has lifted restrictions that blocked Mexican airlines from launching new US routes from Mexico City’s two international airports. The change comes nearly a year after 13 routes operated or planned by Aeromexico, Volaris and Viva Aerobus were blocked.

The decision took effect immediately on Friday, October 16, allowing Mexican carriers to once again apply for new routes and additional flights to the United States. Authorized airports for these new opportunities are Mexico City International Airport (MEX) and Felipe Ángeles International Airport (NLU).

Mexican airlines can once again submit applications for new US routes from Mexico City, resuming expanded route-planning activity. The DOT will continue to oversee these filings.

The update does not specify any changes to existing routes or operational details, but indicates continued oversight by the US DOT as carriers pursue new and additional US-bound services.
