Delta Air Lines Vs. Southwest: Which US Carrier Wins On Passenger Satisfaction In 2026
ACSI puts Delta first. J.D. Power puts Southwest first by three points.
Delta Air Lines and Southwest Airlines faced contrasting results in two major 2026 passenger satisfaction studies published within weeks of each other. The American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) Travel Study, released on April 21, placed Delta at the top of the industry with a score of 79, while Southwest declined from 80 to 77 and dropped from the prior year’s top position.
In contrast, J.D. Power’s North America Airline Satisfaction Study, published on May 6, crowned Southwest first in economy and basic economy with a score of 670, marking the fifth consecutive year at the top for Southwest in that measure. Delta ranked second in the same study with a score of 667.
The two studies arrive with different scopes and methodologies, leading to opposite conclusions about which carrier leads in overall passenger satisfaction in 2026. The ACSI study emphasizes broad, industry-wide customer satisfaction across travel experiences, while J.D. Power focuses on airline-specific satisfaction in distinct fare categories.
The discrepancy between the studies highlights how carriers may perform differently depending on the measuring framework. Delta held a first-place rating in the ACSI Travel Study, whereas Southwest secured the top ranking in J.D. Power’s economy and basic economy categories, according to the published results.
