NBAA is applauding a new tool being developed by the FAA to help pilots self certify and to give them guidance when renewing their medicals. The MedGuide is an interactive online device that allows pilots and operators to determine whether they are in compliance with FAA medical requirements on a host of potential disqualifying scenarios, including the use of prescription and over-the-counter drugs. “This tool, while still a work in progress, equips aviators to make safe, fit-for-flight decisions about medication use,” said Mark Larsen, CAM, NBAA’s director of safety and flight operations. “Pilots are accustomed to clear, if-then directions, and MedGuide offers a more direct way to understand both prescription and over-the-counter medications, including any wait time after an initial or subsequent dose.”

The site has a search field and filling in the drug name or medical condition brings up the status of those factors in regards to medical qualifications. The system only includes a few permitted drugs at the moment, but the plan is to keep adding drugs and medical conditions to build a resource that will alert pilots and operators to potential issues with medical certification. It is not meant to substitute for a proper consultation with a healthcare professional. The new guide is the result of recommendations from the Mental Health and Aviation Medical Clearances Aviation Rulemaking Committee report issued to Congress in 2024. More work on medical certification is anticipated with passage of the Aviation Medication Transparency Act of 2026, which is expected to become law in coming months.
