The FlyDubai pilot who was attacked by his First Officer has filled in some of the details of the flight deck struggle that ultimately saved the airplane and the 180 people onboard. In his first interview, Capt. Smit Machchhar said one of the off-duty pilots who ended up landing the plane (missing most of its rudder) was on the flight deck chatting with Machchhar when FO Hamal al-Hammami came back from the washroom. Machchhar said the FO asked the other pilot to leave saying he needed to pray. Moments later, he began hitting his captain on the head with the rescue axe. As the blows rained down, Machchhar said he saw on a camera monitor showing the galley that the off duty pilot was on the other side of the door. He managed to open the door to let help in and the rest has been well documented. What follows is the most uncut version of the interview we could find.
