Runway at Midway Airport temporarily closed for safety repairs, CDA says
Runway 22L is now closed to arrivals and departures for repairs to a runway safety system.
A runway at Midway International Airport is temporarily closed to arrivals and departures for safety repairs, the Chicago Department of Aviation announced on Monday.
Runway 22L is shut while crews repair the Engineered Materials Arresting System (EMAS) at the departure end of the runway, following damage from recent aircraft activity, including jet blast.
The EMAS safety system was installed after a 2005 accident in which a jetliner sliding off a snowy runway struck a busy street, resulting in a fatality.
CDA Commissioner Michael McMurray emphasized that safety is the top priority and said the department is coordinating with the FAA and airlines to minimize disruptions and restore normal operations as quickly and safely as possible.
The closure may cause flight delays and cancellations, with variations based on airline schedules and weather conditions such as wind directions; travelers are advised to monitor flight status and check with their airline.
Passengers affected are urged to work directly with their air carrier about rebooking or other changes, and the department will continue coordinating with the FAA and airlines to limit operational impacts during repairs, which are expected to be completed by mid-November.
