Lightspeed Headset Software For Rotax Noise
Lightspeed software could tame fatiguing Rotax engine noise. The post Lightspeed Headset Software For Rotax Noise appeared first on AvBrief.com.
To our ears, the higher frequency acoustic signature of Rotax engines can be more fatiguing than with many direct-drive small aviation piston engines partly because the Rotax run at higher RPM. But now all owners of the Lightspeed Aviation Delta Zulu noise-canceling headset might get at least some relief thanks to a software tweak. It’s intended for Rotax 912 iS/c, 915 iS/c and 916 iS engines.
The Rotax ANR and Audio Profile feature was initially offered through the Rotax Care program for new aircraft purchases when the Delta Zulu headset was offered as an accessory during the sale, but now the software is available to all Delta Zulu headset owners. And if the headset is also used in non-Rotax applications, the user can switch the headset back to the standard noise-canceling audio profile through the Lightspeed app, and then switch back to Rotax mode as needed.
The free Rotax profile firmware is loaded with the Lightspeed app via a Bluetooth connection to an iPhone or iPad. After loading, you navigate to the Equalizer section in the app and select ANR and Audio Profile, and activate the Rotax ANR & Audio Profile. Lightspeed says the initial profile installation may take 15 to 20 minutes, but subsequent profile changes typically take approximately 30 seconds to complete. Lightspeed says anyone who enrolls in the Rotax Care Program will receive a Lightspeed Delta Zulu headset with this Rotax ANR and Audio Profile pre-installed.
The Rotax profile feature won’t work with other Lightspeed headset models, only with the flagship Delta Zulu model, which has a retail price of $1299. The Delta Zulu was released in 2022 and in addition to the headset’s so-called safety wearable features (it has a built-in CO detector and warning system) it also has a built-in electronic EQ feature called HearingEQity that might help compensate for a pilot’s hearing loss after the set runs a 12-frequency hearing analysis for each ear.
We’ll look at the market for noise-canceling headsets in an upcoming field report in Smart Aviator on AvBrief.
