Houthis launch lethal attack on Saudi Arabia's King Fahd Airport
The Saudi Civil Aviation Authority said that material damage was under assessment.
Two people were killed and eight others injured in an attack on King Fahd International Airport in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, according to the Saudi Civil Aviation Authority. Officials were assessing the extent of the damage as operations resumed the following morning, the aviation authority said.
In a separate incident, two people were killed after Saudi air defenses intercepted a drone targeting a facility at Saudi Aramco's Shaybah oilfield. The energy ministry attributed the deaths to debris from the interception and noted that the facility’s operations were not affected.
The incidents occur amid an escalation of missile strikes by Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthis against targets in the kingdom. Saudi authorities reported that the responses have included strikes on missile launcher sites as part of measures to protect the kingdom.
The energy ministry said the drone attack caused a vehicle fire outside the oilfield perimeter, but did not impact the field’s operations. It cited an official source for the information and did not provide details on the broader consequences of the attack.
The State Department ordered some US diplomats and their families to depart from several missions in Saudi Arabia, citing attacks by the Houthis in Yemen on civilian targets in the country. The department described the action as a departure of non-emergency personnel and their families.
