AMESBURY, UK — A Royal Air Force (RAF) Airbus A400M Atlas military transport aircraft has been holding in UK airspace for over two hours after declaring a mid-air emergency shortly after takeoff.

Incident Summary

The four-engine turboprop airlifter (bearing registration ZM417) departed runway 23 at MOD Boscombe Down in Amesbury, Wiltshire. Shortly after departure, the flight crew aborted its climb at 11,000 feet.

At approximately 2:00 PM local time, the crew transmitted a Squawk 7700 code, the international aviation transponder signal used to declare an operational or general emergency.

Flight Status & Holding Patterns

Since issuing the emergency code, the large tactical transport aircraft has been executing holding maneuvers over the UK:

Holding Altitude: Capped at 11,000 feet.

Flight Profiles: The aircraft has been circling between two distinct holding patterns.

Airspeed: Flight tracking monitors show ground speeds varying between 190 knots and 290 knots.

Holding in a pattern for an extended period is a standard safety procedure used by military and commercial flight crews to burn off excess fuel, complete diagnostic checklists, or prepare the aircraft for a heavy-weight landing or diversion.

Cause Currently Unknown

The exact cause of the emergency signal remains unconfirmed by officials. Neither the Ministry of Defence nor RAF Air Transport representatives have issued a detailed statement regarding whether the squawk was triggered by a mechanical glitch, system warning, or environmental factor.

Air traffic controllers and emergency services at nearby airfields remain on standby as monitoring of flight ZM417 continues.
