City of Dawson Creek continues push to restore passenger air service, report shows

The latest strategic priorities report card from the City of Dawson Creek indicates restoring scheduled passenger flights to Dawson Creek Regional Airport remains a key objective. Officials say they are engaging with airlines and potential partners to bring commercial air service back to the community.

The city frames improved air connections as a driver for economic development and stronger links to larger centers. The report notes that any future passenger service would need to prove long-term demand and financial sustainability before an airline would commit.

The effort follows WestJet ending service to Dawson Creek more than three years ago; WestJet had announced in early 2023 that it would discontinue WestJet Link flights as part of a broader regional restructure.

Since the loss of service, city officials have focused on maintaining and improving airport infrastructure while seeking opportunities to attract commercial carriers, according to the report. Upgrades cited include new airfield lighting funding, a de-icing truck and a self-serve fuel station.

The report also emphasizes the airport’s ongoing role in the region, supporting emergency medical flights, private aviation and other essential air services, and states that officials will continue collaborating with regional partners and the aviation industry to strengthen the airport’s long-term future.
