North Peace Regional Airport bringing operations in-house after 30 years, eyes new flight destinations
The transition will give the region more direct control over future investments, expansion plans and air service development.
The North Peace Regional Airport Society plans to bring management of the Fort St. John airport in-house after about 30 years of external management, allowing more direct regional control over investments, expansion plans and air service development.
The transition includes hiring Carmen Hendry as the new Chief Executive Officer, with work starting in January 2027 and operational control officially shifting on March 17, 2027. The airport is governed by a regional partnership including the City of Fort St. John, the District of Taylor, the District of Hudson’s Hope and Peace River Regional District electoral areas B and C.
Officials say local control will enable greater influence over how revenue is invested, potential infrastructure and technology upgrades, and enhanced passenger facilities. The airport aims to strengthen its ability to advocate for additional flight options and work directly with airlines on future service opportunities.
The airport serves passengers from across northeastern British Columbia, including Fort Nelson, Dawson Creek and surrounding communities, acting as a regional transportation hub for the area. There is an expectation that closer local involvement will help pursue new passenger and cargo opportunities with airline partners.
The change is framed as keeping decision-making closer to the region and positioning the facility for future growth, while ensuring compliance with Transport Canada requirements and maintaining the airport’s operational record. The North Peace Regional Airport currently handles around 250,000 passengers per year.
