Authorities in Campo Verde, Brazil have confirmed there were no injuries among 183 children and 40 staff in a daycare center that was struck by a cropduster shortly after it took off from a nearby airport last Friday. Surveillance video is now surfacing showing the Piper Pawnee apparently struggling to stay in the air at a low altitude before descending rapidly. Video from inside the building show it crashing through a window in an unoccupied room that was between two packed classrooms. The 28-year-old pilot also survived and was able to get out of the wreck on his own. He was taken to a hospital to be treated for chest fractures and is expected to recover. The plane was in several pieces.
All the children were between the ages of one and five and were evacuated by teachers. Fuel leaked from the wreckage but firefighters were able to prevent it from igniting. The daycare is about 450 yards from the end of the runway at Campo Verde Airfield. The town is in the western Brazil state of Mato Grosso.
