NORAD has deployed short-range mobile missiles at President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home in Palm Beach, Florida at the request of the Secret Service. It’s not clear what prompted the added layer of security to the already well defended estate. Florida television station WPTV shot video of what appeared to be Humvee-mounted Avenger missile launchers inside the Mar-a-Lago compound and the military confirmed the deployment. TFR busts by light aircraft are a regular occurrence at the president’s southern residence and have prompted pleas from NORAD for pilots to check for and abide by NOTAMs announcing them. The missiles were spotted on Friday and NORAD said an F-16 pilot had to use a “head butt maneuver” to get the attention of a small aircraft pilot on Saturday.

The Avenger system is specifically designed to take out low altitude threats from aircraft and drones and can be launched from stationary positions or when the Humvees are moving. In case the missiles miss, there’s a 50 caliber machine gun on one of the pods on each vehicle. The Pentagon didn’t want to say why it put the equipment there beyond saying the Secret Service asked for it. “Due to security considerations, we cannot provide tactics, techniques and procedural specifics,” the military said in a statement to WPTV
