Student pilots are naturally focused on flying but maintaining a flight medical is easily as important to career-minded trainees and ASA has written the book on that. An Aviator’s Field Guide to FAA Medical Certification isn’t so much about health and health conditions as it is a roadmap to keeping on the right side of the multi-faceted medical qualification system. “FAA medical certification is not solely a clinical determination—it is a regulatory and legal process,” ASA says in its description of the new text. “This book explains how the Federal Aviation Administration evaluates applications for airman medical certificates under 14 CFR Part 67 and why a favorable clinical assessment by a personal physician does not always result in medical certification.”

The book is aimed at students to give them a good grounding in navigating the myriad twists and turns even minor medical issues can send a pilot on. It’s up to date with the most recent medical reforms launched by the FAA and it specifically deals with avoiding mistakes new pilots make when getting that all-important first medical and keeping it.
