WestJet CEO calls for national aviation strategy amid rising costs
WestJet CEO Alexis von Hoensbroech is calling on the federal government to develop a national aviation strategy, warning that rising costs and regulatory pressures are threatening the competitiveness of Canada’s airline industry.
WestJet CEO Alexis von Hoensbroech is urging Ottawa to develop a national aviation strategy to address rising costs and regulatory pressures that could affect Canada’s airline competitiveness.
Speaking at the Calgary Chamber of Commerce, he called for a coordinated aviation policy that supports investment, affordable air travel and reliable community connections.
Von Hoensbroech highlighted Calgary’s growing role as an aviation hub, noting partnerships with the provincial government and Calgary International Airport that have attracted investments such as a Lufthansa Technik engine maintenance facility and a new CAE aviation training centre.
WestJet, celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2026, serves more than 100 destinations from Calgary and operates a fleet approaching 200 aircraft, according to the remarks.
He warned that increasing fuel prices, airport fees, taxes and labour disruptions are pressuring an industry with narrow margins, and cautioned against government financial assistance that could distort competition. He urged Ottawa to consider the cumulative impact of policies rather than addressing rules in isolation.
