American Airlines flight lands safely after Phase 5 alert at BTV

A Phase 5 alert was declared at Patrick Leahy Burlington International Airport (BTV) after an American Airlines flight from Charlotte experienced what officials believe was a steering problem.

Airport officials say 54 people were on board, and the aircraft landed without reported injuries. The plane was then towed from the runway to the terminal.

Airport Director of Innovation and Marketing Jeff Bartley told NBC5 that the incident prompted a Phase 5 response, which classifies an aircraft emergency with 30 or more aboard requiring major outside emergency resources. Officials are assessing whether the issue occurred in the air or on the runway.

The runway has reopened, and Bartley noted there were no flight delays or other impacts reported at the airport. The exact cause of the steering issue remains under investigation by the airport and the FAA.
