Virgin Galactic wasted little time getting its new spaceship airborne on Wednesday. Apeiron, named following a worldwide contest, was unveiled Wednesday morning and on its way from the company’s new “Spaceship Factory” at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport to its Spaceport America in Southern New Mexico. It made the flight strapped to the Eve transport plane and the aircraft landed at the spaceport just before 1 p.m.
Apeiron is Virgin Galactic’s next generation design of its commercial spacecraft designed to be flown under the carrier plane to about 40,000 feet and then using an onboard rocket engine to climb to the edge of space at 62 miles above the surface. Passengers will pay $750,000 for the brief flight. The vehicle seats six passengers and a pilot and is designed to be flown twice a week. The first paying customers are scheduled to go up in February of 2027, after flight testing at the spaceport.
