Dr Harold Goodwin is highlighted for his extensive work across four continents with communities, governments, accommodation providers, and the inbound and outbound tourism sector. He holds multiple leadership roles, including Professor Emeritus and Responsible Tourism Director at Manchester Metropolitan University’s Institute of Place Management.

The piece notes his involvement as founder of ICRT.global, Managing Director of the Responsible Tourism Partnership, and adviser to WTM Africa on its Responsible Tourism programme. He also chairs judging panels for the World Responsible Tourism Awards and related regional awards in Africa, Europe, India, Latin America, and Southeast Asia.

His leadership extends to the ICRTD series, which began in 2002 as International Conferences on Responsible Tourism in Destinations, with co-chairs drawn from the local host organisations. He is described as Founder Director of the International Centre for Responsible Tourism, established in 2002 to promote the 2002 Cape Town Declaration principles.

In 2022, the Responsible Tourism Charter was signed on Magna Carta Island, reflecting two decades of applying tourism to improve places for local people to live in and to visit. The article situates Goodwin within a framework of responsible tourism advocacy and leadership.
