US renews Saudi Arabia warning over possible airport attacks and flight disruptions
US warns citizens in Saudi Arabia of potential airport attacks, airspace closures, and flight disruptions amid escalating regional hostilities.
The US Mission to Saudi Arabia issued a countrywide security alert warning American citizens of possible attacks on airports, airspace closures and flight disruptions amid ongoing regional hostilities.
The advisory notes that the U.S. Department of State ordered non-emergency government employees and their families to depart Saudi Arabia, effective October 23, due to safety risks. It cites attacks by Iranian-supported Houthis on civilian airports and critical infrastructure, mentioning ensuing travel disruption and civilian casualties.
Saudi airport operations are described as disrupted, with Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport partially reopening for domestic flights and some international services, while other flights pause or shift to alternative airports. Jeddah’s King Abdulaziz International Airport remains operational but experiences delays and cancellations, and Dammam’s King Fahd International Airport operates with some delays and cancellations.
The alert provides specific travel restrictions for U.S. staff in Saudi Arabia, including the need for Chief of Mission authorization to use any airport and prohibition on travel within 20 miles of the Yemen border. Travel to certain provinces and cities requires special authorization.
In terms of travel options and safety guidance, the advisory advises travelers to check flight status with airlines and airports, consider alternative transport modes where feasible, and follow Saudi authorities’ instructions and local media. It also reminds that land borders remain open and lists regional transport providers, urging verification of schedules.
The advisory reiterates restrictions on filming missile and drone intercepts or impact sites, noting that violations have led to detentions. It encourages Americans to stay alert, carry emergency contacts, and enroll in STEP for security updates and emergencies. Emergency consular services remain available through the U.S. Embassy in Riyadh and consulates in Jeddah and Dhahran.
