Nine months after Ajit Pawar’s plane crash, Baramati airport set for ₹65-cr upgrade | Hindustan Times
The works include recarpeting of the runway, construction of a runway-end safety area, area grading, a compound wall and an ATC tower
The Maharashtra government has approved the first phase of Baramati Airport’s upgrade, with an estimated cost of ₹65 crore.
The announced works will focus on runway improvements, safety infrastructure, and air traffic management facilities at the airfield, according to Deepak Kapoor of the Maharashtra Airport Development Company.
Phase I includes recarpeting the runway, constructing a runway-end safety area (RESA), grading the surrounding area, building a compound wall, and developing an air traffic control (ATC) tower.
Baramati Airport has long faced demands for upgrade and has historically operated without a dedicated ATC tower, with traffic information once managed by personnel from flying training organisations.
Aviation expert commentary noted that while the phase addresses key gaps, a comprehensive safety upgrade would require attention to other aspects such as operational procedures, weather reporting, navigation facilities, emergency response, and regulatory oversight.
