On October 31, 1974, President Idi Amin’s presidential aircraft was diverted from its planned route to Entebbe and landed at Tororo Airfield in eastern Uganda after intelligence indicated a plot to assassinate him by two Uganda Air Force officers.

Amin had been returning from a one-day diplomatic visit to Mogadishu, Somalia, when the security team received information about an attack on the aircraft upon its Entebbe arrival, prompting the unscheduled diversion.

The destination change brought the flight to Tororo, a smaller airfield near Uganda’s eastern border with Kenya, as authorities reportedly acted on the alleged plot.

Following the incident, a security crackdown led to the arrest and execution of the two officers suspected of organizing the plot, along with several alleged accomplices, and a broader purge within the Uganda Air Force targeting certain communities.

The episode contributed to a pattern of increased distrust and upheaval within Amin’s security and military structures, with changes in personnel and heightened precautions becoming part of his routine, ultimately influencing the broader trajectory of Amin’s presidency.
