Southwest Airlines Axed Dallas’ 3rd Airport Because “It Didn’t Really Work,” CEO Admits
A $72 million terminal in McKinney opens mid November with Avelo launching 11 leisure routes and room to grow.
Southwest Airlines has decided not to operate services to Dallas’ upcoming third airport, McKinney National Airport (DTX). The airline’s Chief Executive Officer Bob Jordan indicated that the numbers did not justify the move.
The third airport for the Dallas area is planned to open to commercial passengers from mid-November, expanding the region’s aviation infrastructure beyond Dallas/Fort Worth International and Dallas Love Field. However, Southwest has chosen not to participate in serving DTX.
The decision was described by Southwest leadership as a result of the numbers not stacking up to the point of operation, according to a statement or implication linked to a local report by WFAA.
No specific details were provided about which routes, aircraft, or schedule considerations affected the decision, and the material does not include dates beyond the planned mid-November opening or any outcomes from the airline’s choice.
