Dozens gathered at Vancouver International Airport on Saturday for a rally against the federal government’s airport privatization plans, organized by unionized workers and allies. Flags and signs were on display as participants listened to speeches from union leaders and NDP MP Don Davies.

Speakers from the unions outlined concerns about private investors pursuing profits, contrasting them with a not-for-profit model they say currently benefits the airport and the broader community. Sharon DeSousa, national president of the Public Service Alliance of Canada, argued that public services should not be used for profit.

Barry Tchir, national president of the Union of Canadian Transportation Employees, defended the existing not-for-profit structure. He highlighted that YVR is considered efficient and that profits in the current model are reinvested into airport infrastructure and the surrounding community.

The protest called for more details from the federal government on its plans, including the source of potential outside investment and how privatization would be implemented. The government has not publicly outlined concrete privatization plans for Canada’s four largest airports, including Vancouver.
