A business jet flying out of Austin crashed in a Florida neighborhood, resulting in at least nine fatalities, according to U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the Learjet 60 departed from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport with a destination of North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas and crashed around 12:50 p.m. in Palm Beach County, Florida.

The crash caused a fiery blast and prompted an emergency response that closed all northbound and southbound lanes of Military Trail between Cresthaven Boulevard and 10th Avenue North while investigators work the scene.

Video from the scene showed flames and thick smoke above the roadway, with visible debris and damaged pavement, the Associated Press reported.

The FAA's aircraft registry lists the jet as registered to LR60271 LLC, with an address in Wilmington, Delaware, and flight-tracking data corroborated the route from Austin toward the Bahamas prior to the crash.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office is investigating, but the cause of the crash remains unknown, and officials have not confirmed injuries on the ground. The FAA cautioned that its information is preliminary and subject to change as the investigation continues. This is a developing story.
