All nine people died aboard a business jet that crashed into a Florida neighborhood, transportation secretary says
A business jet carrying nine people nose-dived into a South Florida neighborhood Sunday and erupted into a giant fireball that appeared to just miss homes before crashing near a busy roadway, creating a giant fiery crater in the pavement.
A business jet with nine people on board crashed into a South Florida neighborhood Sunday, erupting into a large fireball and narrowly missing homes as it struck near a roadway. Transportation secretary Sean Duffy confirmed all on board were killed.
Video from inside passing vehicles captured the moment the Learjet 60 plunged from the sky and exploded near the road, with flames and debris visible around the crater created by the impact.
The aircraft departed Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas and was en route to the Bahamas, according to the FAA. The airplane was reportedly at altitude when pilots requested to climb due to turbulence, icing, and precipitation before entering a steep dive.
Authorities described the scene as a cataclysmic crash with a noticeable crater. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said there were no immediate reports of ground injuries or fatalities, though the crash prompted evacuations of nearby residents and a road closure.
Federal investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board, with support from the FAA, are examining the circumstances. Local authorities evacuated about 600 people from a nearby mobile home community as officials continue the investigation. Rain was falling in the area at the time.
