John I. Leonard High School will be closed Monday as emergency crews continue responding to a deadly aircraft crash near the school’s Greenacres campus, according to the School District of Palm Beach County.

The crash occurred on nearby Military Trail, between Cresthaven Boulevard and 10th Avenue North, with response efforts continuing into Sunday and Monday.

The FAA reported a Learjet 60 crashed in a residential area around 12:50 p.m. Sunday while en route from Austin, Texas to the Bahamas. All nine people aboard were killed, officials said.

All other district-operated schools are scheduled to open Monday, with heavy rain forecast into the morning that could delay buses and slow car lines. The district urged drivers to use caution near school zones and bus stops, and to track bus routes via the Here Comes the Bus app.

The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation, with assistance from the FAA. All district-operated schools will be closed Tuesday, Nov. 3, for Election Day, per the district.
