Backcountry aviation will continue to thrive near some of the world’s busiest airspace with the preservation of a High Rock Airfield in Maryland. The Recreational Aviation Foundation has announced that the late Bob Armstrong gave the private airport about 90 miles from Washington, D.C. to RAF ensure it stays available for public use. “We are humbled to have become the stewards of this special place, and will honor the Armstrong family’s legacy by creating a welcoming place to enjoy the fellowship of backcountry aviation,” said RAF President Bill McGlynn.

The airfield was built in a bend of the north branch of the Potomac by the family as a base for their own large collection of vintage aircraft. RAF said the 1,730-foot strip “offers a real backcountry experience” to those who want to explore the wilderness attractions of northern Maryland and Virginia. RAF is well known for its work preserving and enhancing backcountry strips all over the western states and it’s recently embarked on its Expanding the Map program to strips all over the U.S. RAF now also lists strips in Tennessee and recently added some in California and Utah.
