Incheon International Airport has implemented an AI-powered smart monitoring system for its Baggage Handling System (BHS) in Terminal 2. The system, developed by Incheon International Airport Corp., tracks key equipment in real time, including baggage sorters, conveyor motors, and arrival hall carousels.

Sensors collect data from BHS components and machine-learning software analyzes it to identify parts likely to fail. Results are displayed on a three-level color scale: green for normal, yellow for caution, and red for danger, along with the likely cause of each issue.

The monitor began operating in Terminal 2 on October 26, with the aim of enabling preventive maintenance before faults occur. This marks a shift from the previous approach, which focused on repairs after failures.

The airport expects benefits from the AI system, including reduced unexpected shutdowns, longer equipment life, lower repair costs, and fewer baggage delays, ultimately improving passenger convenience.

Cho Yong-soo, executive director of operations at Incheon International Airport Corp., said the AI-based system should reduce baggage equipment management costs and enhance passenger experience, with ongoing adoption of advanced digital technologies to stabilize operations.
