Cyclone Murasu swept toward the coast of Tamil Nadu and parts of South Andhra Pradesh, prompting heavy rainfall across Chennai and neighboring districts, according to the Indian Meteorological Department.
The weather update shows Murasu as a severe cyclonic storm over west-central and adjacent southwest Bay of Bengal, moving west-north-west at about 25 kmph. The system was positioned roughly 200 km east-northeast of Chennai and varying distances from several Andhra Pradesh locations.
A forecast bulletin cited that it is very likely to move northwest and cross the south Andhra Pradesh coast as a severe cyclonic storm with wind speeds of 100 to 110 kmph gusting to 120 kmph near Nellore and Ongole between late Nov 2 night and early Nov 3.
Chennai Airport reported that at least eleven flights were cancelled on Monday, affecting routes including Chennai-Vijayawada, Chennai-Rajahmundry, Chennai-Kadapa, and Chennai-Tiruchirappalli. Passengers were advised to contact their respective airlines for further information.
Local authorities in Chennai indicated there were no major incidents, with no relief camps opened and only minor inundations reported in some parts of North Chennai. Traffic remained mostly smooth, and subways were noted as open.
The update reflects ongoing monitoring as Cyclone Murasu continues its approach toward the Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh coasts, with further adjustments likely as the storm’s path and intensity evolve.
