NTSB to brief on deadly Greenacres jet crash as 600 residents remain displaced
A Learjet 60 crashed near Military Trail and 10th Avenue North on Sunday, killing all nine people on board and forcing about 600 residents to evacuate.
A Learjet 60 crashed near Military Trail and 10th Avenue North, killing all nine people on board, according to the FAA. The incident prompted the evacuation of about 600 residents from a nearby mobile home community.
The crash occurred as the jet was en route from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas to North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas, with the NTSB leading the investigation and receiving assistance from the FAA.
Emergency responders reported a crater in the roadway and scattered debris in the surrounding area, but officials said no ground injuries were reported. The NTSB was expected to provide an update later Monday in West Palm Beach.
The evacuation prompted the temporary closure of Military Trail between Cresthaven Boulevard and 10th Avenue North, with authorities noting the closure could last weeks as investigators work and the roadway is assessed. Evacuees were directed to the Greenacres Community Center for shelter.
Nearby facilities were affected, including the closure of John I. Leonard High School, and a local restaurant, Señor Lechón, reported being impacted but stated its staff and customers were safe. A memorial Mass for the victims was scheduled for Monday morning at Our Lady Queen of Peace Cemetery in Royal Palm Beach.
Authorities had not publicly identified the victims as of Monday morning. This is a developing story; updates were anticipated from the NTSB in West Palm Beach.
