Greenland completes hat-trick as Ilulissat Airport opens as third international gateway
The Danish Transport Authority has approved the opening of Ilulissat International Airport in Greenland - the third and final airport
Greenland has completed a three-airport expansion programme with the opening of Ilulissat International Airport on 29 October, marked by an Air Greenland A330neo service from Copenhagen. The new gateway becomes Greenland’s third international airport, expanding international connectivity in the region.
The introduction of Ilulissat International Airport aims to improve access to the UNESCO-listed Ilulissat Icefjord, with anticipated benefits for tourism and enhanced passenger and cargo links. The development is described as part of a broader initiative to bolster Greenland’s aviation network.
Operational rollout at Ilulissat will proceed gradually, with progress extending toward summer 2027. The plan acknowledges a phased approach as capacity and services scale up over time.
Nuuk’s earlier operational difficulties are noted as a reference point for the anticipated challenges ahead in expanding and integrating the new international gateway within Greenland’s aviation framework.
