Officials reported a massive evacuation as Cyclone Murasu approached the eastern coast, prompting widespread disruption to air travel in several states. The evacuation drive was undertaken to move residents from high-risk zones in advance of the cyclone’s landfall.
The meteorological department documented the cyclone making landfall on the Andhra Pradesh coast around 1 a.m. on Monday night, with the system having completely crossed the coast by about 4 a.m. local time.
In response to the developing situation, authorities began cancelling flights to and from airports in affected areas as a precautionary measure to ensure passenger safety and facilitate emergency operations.
While the number of evacuees in Odisha is reported as 1.6 lakh, the impact on flight schedules included the cancellation of about 30 flights across airports impacted by the cyclone’s progression. The guidance to postpone or reroute services was part of broader safety precautions during the cyclone event.
Rail and road networks were also affected by precautionary evacuations and weather conditions, with officials emphasizing that more updates would follow as the situation evolved and rescue or relief efforts continued.
