Nine people were killed when a business jet that had departed from Texas crashed in a Palm Beach County neighborhood, according to family statements released after the event.

The families identified the victims as including co-pilot Nathalia Filgueiras, 20, and captain Jeffrey Gregory, 55, with the aircraft on a flight from Austin, Texas to the Bahamas when the incident occurred near Greenacres, Florida.

The crash occurred on Sunday as the jet encountered weather and severe turbulence, with the pilot communicating about managing icing and subsequently declaring a Mayday, per FAA information and audio records.

Aviation authorities noted the aircraft reached speeds beyond its design limits, with an overspeed condition reported by the pilot and signs that the plane may have begun breaking up before impact; investigators described a debris field about a half-mile wide and ongoing efforts to recover major wreckage from a roadway crater.

The National Transportation Safety Board stated it aimed to locate the cockpit voice recorder to obtain key details about the events preceding the crash, while families asked for privacy as memorial plans are arranged and expressed gratitude to first responders and the community.
