1 killed and 2 others injured when a helicopter crashes into bay near Miami, officials say
One person was killed and two others were seriously injured on Wednesday when a helicopter crashed into Biscayne Bay near Miami, officials said.
A Robinson R44 II helicopter crashed into Biscayne Bay near Bill Baggs State Park, off Key Biscayne, shortly before noon on Wednesday, according to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office.
The U.S. Coast Guard confirmed that one occupant died and the other two were seriously injured, with the latter pair transported to a local trauma center.
Initial information from the National Transportation Safety Board indicates the aircraft may have been on a photography flight at the time of the crash, and several local fire departments responded to the scene.
Rescue personnel from multiple agencies, along with U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Customs and Border Protection, assisted at the site after the crash. A Good Samaritan was reportedly helping an injured person when responders arrived.
The two survivors were reported in critical but stable condition, and authorities said the cause of the crash remains under investigation; weather conditions were not confirmed as a contributing factor. Occupant identities had not been released at the time of the report.
