Major commercial development proposed on airport lands in Sidney
A new commercial centre featuring a grocery store, restaurant, coffee shop and other retailers could be coming to Sidney, but the proposal is now in the hands of the Victoria Airport Authority.
A new commercial development could be built on federally owned airport lands in Sidney, bringing four buildings and about 42,000 square feet of retail space to 9771 Stirling Way, near Beacon Avenue West and the Towneplace Suites by Marriott.
The proposal is currently under review by the Town of Sidney after being referred from the Victoria Airport Authority, which has the authority to approve or reject projects on airport lands in Sidney.
Under the current plan, the project meets Sidney’s zoning requirements and does not require a zoning amendment, unlike a prior proposal in the area that sought a larger complex.
The review process involves town staff preparing a report, council providing feedback, and those comments being considered by the Victoria Airport Authority as part of its decision.
Public participation is open, with opportunities to email comments to the town or airport authority, and to speak at the December 7 council meeting in person or via Zoom, with registration by noon on the meeting day.
