A new wave of bomb threats disrupted European air traffic on Thursday, November 5, prompting emergency procedures, aircraft diversions and the deployment of specialist bomb disposal teams at several airports. The security alerts affected flights and airports in France, Italy, Belgium, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Poland and Austria, with no injuries reported and no confirmed explosive devices found so far.
One notable incident involved an Aer Lingus Airbus A320 flight from Dublin to Rome that was diverted to the Évreux military airbase in France after a bomb threat. The aircraft landed safely and passengers and crew were evacuated while specialists inspected the aircraft.
Another security event saw a Finnair flight from Helsinki to Rome escorted by Italian Air Force jets before landing safely at Rome’s Fiumicino Airport. Authorities reported no disruption to normal operations after the landing. Finnair later confirmed a separate Finnair flight from Helsinki to Vienna had also received a threat and landed normally.
In Bulgaria, emergency landings occurred for three aircraft arriving from Copenhagen, Madrid and London following bomb threats. A LOT Polish Airlines flight from Warsaw landed at Brussels Airport after a suspicious security alert, while four flights heading to Prague in the Czech Republic received emergency security protocols and later were inspected by bomb disposal teams, who did not report finding explosives.
Across Europe, authorities are investigating whether the threats are connected. Investigators are examining potential links between incidents and whether they constitute a coordinated operation or separate events, with no group claiming responsibility at this time.
