French prosecutors have opened a probe into bogus bomb threats that disrupted dozens of commercial flights across Europe over the past week, with a focus on whether foreign powers could be involved.
The investigation aims to identify the authors of the emails disseminating the false information and to explore any possible links to foreign powers, according to the Paris prosecutor’s office.
Several of the incidents involved flights passing over French territory, and the French government said the origin of the threats is being investigated.
Ireland’s government said the hoax bomb claims directed at Irish media outlets appear to be part of a coordinated disruption campaign connected to the airline threats, though no explosives were found.
Some messages were signed “fighters of the Male State,” a name associated with a Russian radical misogynist group; the AFP has not confirmed a link to the emails, and the group’s founder has denied involvement.
No injuries or aircraft damage have been reported, and no suspects have been identified in relation to the claims so far.
