Airlines bet on premium travel as rising fuel costs squeeze profits
Airlines are expanding their premium offerings, from luxury seats and Michelin-starred chefs to upgraded airport lounges, as they bet on growing demand for more comfortable and personalised travel experiences.
Airlines are expanding premium offerings as they brace for higher jet fuel costs, betting on growing demand for more comfortable and personalised travel experiences. The shift could reduce the share of economy seats on many flights, with AFP noting that as much as 70% of passengers might opt for enhanced seating or travel in business and first class in the future.
The profitability of premium seating is highlighted by industry observers and examples from U.S. carriers. Premium revenue has shown strong growth for American Airlines, which reported an 18.5% year-on-year increase in its latest quarter, while premium products now account for roughly half of ticket revenue on about 30% of seats.
Airlines are also expanding options within economy, offering extras such as extended legroom or front-seat advantages for additional fees. United Airlines plans to roll out an Economy Plus option to avoid middle-seat assignments on select flights by late 2026, expanding the range of paid comfort choices for travellers.
Capacity shifts are evident as premium seats grow faster than main cabin seats. United has more than doubled its premium-seat capacity from 2015 to 2026, and Delta Air Lines is enhancing its Delta One service with upgraded dining, larger screens, and collaborations with Michelin-starred chefs and renowned sommeliers, targeting new Airbus A350 aircraft with a large premium seat block.
Beyond cabin changes, airlines are upgrading the airport experience with improved lounges, meal options before boarding, and complimentary Wi-Fi. These efforts aim to attract travellers willing to pay more for premium amenities, while the industry continues to face challenges from higher fuel costs and their impact on overall profitability.
